Civil War Letters [microform]. 1862-1864.

Fairfield served as clerk to General Veatch with the 25th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War. Letters were to his wife from Corinth, Miss., Memphis, Tenn., Decatur, Ala. and Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia.

Davis was born in Clark County, Indiana, near present-day Memphis, Indiana. He was born to William Davis, Jr. (1800–1879) and Mary Drummond-Davis (1801–1881), the oldest of their eight children. His father was a farmer. His parents came from Kentucky, and like many of the time including President Abraham Lincoln's family, moved to Indiana. A native and resident of Spencer County, Ind., James Clifford Veatch was a farmer, lawyer, local politician, and member of the Indiana State Legislature before serving as an officer with the 25th Indiana Regiment in the Civil War. He served with the Army of the Tennessee, with William T. Sherman, and the Department of the Gulf.
